On Friday before the announcement of FBI Director James Comey’s letter to Congress saying he was reinvigorating the investigation into Hillary Clinton, I offered an analysis of the possible outcomes in the presidential election. The path to victory for Donald Trump I predicted was very tight. But with these new revelations about Hillary Clinton’s criminal investigation, I have some further thoughts.
Before I get to that, let me make a statement about James Comey. Many Trump supporters and Republican leaders have been highly critical of Comey. There certainly is much to criticize about his handling of the Clinton email scandal. My initial reaction to Comey’s press conference stating reasons why he was not referring prosecution on my Facebook page is something I stand by with one correction. I was wrong about saying Congress should not interrogate Comey. Those hearings brought much to light about the details of how FBI handled the investigation and the politics within the Department of Justice which hampered the FBI’s efforts. But Comey did indict Hillary Clinton in the public’s view saving face a bit. And because of the hearings, we know now he was walking a tightrope with Loretta Lynch . And with the recent revelation that the Department of Justice was putting up roadblocks on FBI’s investigation into the Clinton Foundation scandal, we know Obama and Lynch were finessing the investigations in favor of Clinton. Comey–who was getting lots of flack from FBI agents upset with him threatening to resign if he wouldn’t push forward–has partly redeemed himself.
Now to the Electoral College Map.
It looks like Trump’s narrow path to victory may be opening up a bit.
Excepting that Hillary Clinton’s team doesn’t have another video like the Billy Bush video, the dynamics have changed quite a bit. Nevada and Colorado are now in play I predict. Florida and Ohio are probably in hand. And North Carolina could squeak in to the Trump column. If that plays out in Trump’s favor, Trump can win the election.
There are nine days left as of this post, and that is a lifetime in American politics. But these new revelations are clearly helping Trump as the story is gaining more credibility, and it has changed the news cycle dramatically with greater focus on the one great weakness in Hillary Clinton’s case for the White House.
