Obama–the “Jedi Mind Trick candidate”

October 28, 2008

Mary Katherine Hamm provides a unique description for the ease with which Obama seems to avoid explaining how he doesn’t have the same beliefs as Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, et. al. It’s a Jedi Mind Trick!

McCain against the world

October 25, 2008

john-mccain-flags-crowd McCain against the world

With polls showing disaster for John McCain, Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard puts things in perspective:

[W]e can only echo the words of the 30-year-old Abraham Lincoln. On December 26, 1839, responding to the confident prediction of one of his political opponents “that every State in the Union will vote for Mr. Van Buren at the next Presidential election” and that Lincoln’s opposition to the Van Buren forces was therefore bound to be in vain, Lincoln responded:

“Address that argument to cowards and to knaves; with the free and the brave it will effect nothing. It may be true; if it must, let it. .  .  . The probability that we may fall in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just. .  .  . Let none falter, who thinks he is right, and we may succeed. But if after all, we shall fail, be it so.”

As it happens, the Whig ticket Lincoln supported won that 1840 election. So might, against the odds, the party of Lincoln win this year.

Just another reason to stand firm and continue on.

Does Federal power cause us alarm? . . .

October 22, 2008

. . . It was certainly the concern of the writers of the Federalist papers while defending The Constitution.

“But ambitious encroachments of the federal government, on the authority of the State  governments, would not excite the opposition of a single State, or of a few States only. They would be signals of general alarm… But what degree of madness could ever drive the federal government to such an extremity.”  — James Madison (Federalist No. 46)

Where is the alarm today as the government proceeds with a huge bailout of the banking system?  Where has our discipline gone as a people to spurn government intrusion in our individual, family and economic affairs?  We once believe it was our individual and family responsibility to govern ourselves.  When we acted unwisely, we realized it was left to us as individuals and communities (sans government) to clean up the messes we made.  Now we look to others to get us out of the traps of our own making.  In fact, when it comes to the current financial crisis, Read more

Colin Powell drops the bomb: thud

October 19, 2008

Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama today.

Colin Powell has been a significant leader in the United States.  The first African-American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a distinguished leader of our diplomatic corps as Secretary of State.  He is a capable individual who has built a reputation for being reasoned, steady and honorable; above the political frey.

Colin Powell’s endorsement, sadly, epitomizes politics over substance.

This endorsement will be extremely helpful to Barack Obama.  As I write this, my TwitterFox is popping up a stream of left-wing praise for Powell from Rachel Maddow to the Huffington Post which has six post on the topic already.  We are certain to hear Powell praised incessantly this coming week.  But was this endorsement about Powell’s assesment of the best person for the job?

Powell expressed concern about McCain’s handling of the financial crisis, and he expressed concern about the rightward shift of the Republican party in recent years.  He stated the reason for his support of Obama is Obama’s ability “to inspire,” because his campaign is “inclusive,” because of “his rhetorical abilities,” and he has both “style and substance.”  In other words, Barack Obama makes Colin Powell feel good and he doesn’t like the conservative bent of the Republican party. It’s all available in the video linked below.

Why we should reject the bailout.

Senate version of bailout

October 1, 2008

Yes.  We will continue to call the $700 billion plan to buy up bad debt from financial institutions a bailout.  the Senate version has some notable changes to the failed House version which Club for Growth outlines.

  1. The SEC chairman has the authority to suspend Sarbanes/Oxley “mark to market” rules as he or she sees fit. It’s an improvement, but also opens the door for the current or future chairmen to play political favors.
  2. There is a temporary increase to $250,000 for the FDIC insurance cap.
